Description of Sun's new UltraSPARC

Sun's new UltraSPARC IV+ 64-bit processor

Overview

Sun's new UltraSPARC IV+ 64-bit processor is the fifth generation in our UltraSPARC processor family. It comes with significantly enhanced cores, 2 MB on-chip L2 cache, and an off-chip 32 MB L3 cache. The new 1.95 GHz and 2.1 GHz processors follows Sun's Throughput Computing vision while continuing the tradition of binary code compatibility—and uses the latest 90 nanometer process technology

High Performance

The UltraSPARC IV+ processor features a design that's much improved over the UltraSPARC IV processor—including enhancements to its dual-cores utilizing the latest 90nm process, which enables frequency improvement through smaller transistor sizes.

Investment Protection

Sun's UltraSPARC IV+ processor provides a natural upgrade path for midrange and high-end UltraSPARC III and IV processor-based systems by enabling in-chassis upgrades.

Reliability

The new UltraSPARC IV+ processor delivers a 3x reduction in already-low soft error susceptibility, even with a 5x increase in the number of transistors.
